man. There was a fear that being a professional
musician might not lend itself to being a good
partner or father, but Kelly always made it work.
He was always there for birthdays, holidays,
victories, and losses for both his wife and his
children. His children describe their dad as a
great musician, dad and husband. They call him
a hard worker and, at times, a perfectionist, but
they can’t talk about their dad or his music talent
without also mentioning his dedication to Christ.
Kelly became a follower of Jesus many years ago.
Raised up in a Christian home, he was always
aware of the Lord. He went to church and Sunday
school and even Vacation Bible School. As an
adult, Kelly committed his life to Jesus and later
dedicated his musical gift to the Lord as well.
He is currently the music team leader at Lone
Star Cowboy Church in Lubbock. He has released
an original gospel album called Cowboy Up.
Earlier this year, Kelly had the pleasure of hiring
his youngest son to play drums with him. He
continues to perform locally at clubs and private
venues; sometimes, he still travels to perform. He
sings. He plays guitar. He plays steel guitar. He
writes songs. He is truly an amazing and talented
man.
As Kelly’s wife, I see him as no one else can.
While he is immensely talented, he also is humble
and lives a life of gratitude for what the Lord has
given him.
While I get to spend time with the “private”
Kelly, I must say, he is authentic. The man you see
perform is the same at home as he is on stage. The
music you hear and dance to is the same music
he plays while sitting on the edge of the bed. The
traditional, helpful, generous, genuinely nice guy
you chat with in public is exactly that same man
in private. Kelly Hastey is a brilliant and talented
man, and the music he makes has made this
world a better place.
