and bruised. Coach walked in and looked each of
us in the eyes and quoted the same verse he always
did, II Timothy 1:7. He told us that God did not give
us a spirit of timidity, and he had taught us what we
needed to win. Then he said, “You all have gifts. What
are you going to do about it?”
During the next half, we came back and won by
ten points. We had won the state championship! Our
tiny private school had gone up against the
powerhouse, Shiner. I later found out that the game
announcers called it a “true David and Goliath battle.”
And we had won!
Coach Stout came in and did
what he said he would do:
