THE FRIENDSHIP FACTOR
Rick and Mary Povlich’s 1967 Chevy Camaro SS was a great find, a Camaro from
the very first year of production. Thankfully, Rick knew how rare it was when he
retrieved it from a back yard in Lubbock. With a lot of hard work, in about two
years Rick had it looking pristine again.
Shawn Genenbacher is the newest member of the group, but his 1954 Chevy
Truck 3100 is the oldest vehicle. He’s had it for about a year. When I asked him
why that vehicle, he replied, “I’ve always been drawn to the older style pickups. I
love the body style and the grill. It’s something I’ve always wanted to have.”
Jaime and Sylvia Perez’s 1970 Chevelle Super Sport has great meaning for
them. They were next door neighbors growing up. When they started dating in
high school, Jaime had a 1967 Oldsmobile. The power steering was gone, and the
driver’s door wouldn’t open, but they made do. Then Jaime’s dad took him to a
Robert Renteria car lot, and he saw a 1970 Chevelle Super Sport. He thought it was beautiful. He
had just graduated, gotten a job, and could afford the payment. As young people,
they had great times with that car. Eventually, it was nicknamed “The Airplane”
because, when he fired it up, it would rattle Sylvia’s bedroom window next
door. It was the car they owned on their wedding day. Now all these years later,
their newly-acquired, beautifully-restored 1970 Chevelle brings back precious
memories.
It’s been an amazing thing to see how God has put this fun group of car
enthusiasts together. By now it appears to be more than a coincidence; it seems
more like what some people call a “God Wink.” It definitely wasn’t in the original
plan—a group to honor God and support each other in the things of the Lord, but
it has become a bonus—a big bonus to be enjoyed. The name they have chosen
for themselves seems
appropriate: “Christ
and Classics.”
