CHANGE OF COURSE
FROM
LEADING THE FORCE
TO
As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, C.Q. Brown Jr.
is the highest-ranking and most senior military officer in
the U.S. Armed Forces. He’s also a Red Raider.
When he arrived at Texas Tech, he wanted to be an
architect, but he struggled in freehand drawing and an
introductory design course.
With the help of a teacher, he focused instead on civil
engineering and Air Force ROTC.
In the four decades since, that decision has paid off
time and time again. Brown has been a fighter pilot,
led U.S. air operations in the Indo-Pacific region and
served as Chief of Staff of the Air Force. He is now the
principal military adviser to the president, the National
Security Council, the Homeland Security Council and
the secretary of defense.
