                                                              As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, C.Q. Brown Jr.
                                                              is the highest-ranking and most senior military officer in
                                                              the U.S. Armed Forces. He’s also a Red Raider.

                                                              When he arrived at Texas Tech, he wanted to be an
                                                              architect, but he struggled in freehand drawing and an
                                                              introductory design course.

                                                              With the help of a teacher, he focused instead on civil
                                                              engineering and Air Force ROTC.

                                                              In the four decades since, that decision has paid off
                                                              time and time again. Brown has been a fighter pilot,
                                                              led U.S. air operations in the Indo-Pacific region and
                                                              served as Chief of Staff of the Air Force. He is now the
                                                              principal military adviser to the president, the National
                                                              Security Council, the Homeland Security Council and
                                                              the secretary of defense.
