“Our Excellence Is Inspired by You!”
Dunbar teammate of Bert’s, was killed in an accident.
Six grandchildren and now a great-grandchild all
respect the leadership qualities in their grandfather
and aspire to be like him.
Bert spent much of his youth at the Boys and Girls
Club on E. 24th. The BGC is where he developed his
athletic skills under the direction of Mr. Theodore
Phea. Most of his friends were also members. He
will forever be grateful to Mr. Phea for making the
club a safe place for everyone. “Mr. Phea mentored
a mean and angry individual into a caring youth,
willing to be a servant to others.” Many years
later, that location was renamed in honor of Ted
Phea, and Bert was named the director. “It was the
greatest honor to follow in his footsteps,” and one
of his responsibilities was to oversee the team's Teen
Center, which was named after his brother Joe.
More recently, despite his old football injuries, Bert
volunteers at the Vet Center as he has for 16 years
– helping countless veterans get the compensation
they deserve. He is still helping, still leading, still
making a difference!
