coach at Irons, and he made me feel welcome and important,
even as an elementary kid hanging out in the gym, until it
was time to go home. I have looked up to him as a mentor for
most of my life. Because of him, I plan to become a coach. He
was the one person who kept me from quitting football in high
school, which is why I find myself where I am in life right now.
My future opportunities as a college football player would not
be possible without his influence and lessons on persistence.
He has always continued to show up for my classmates and
me, even after we left Irons. We often saw him in the stands
of our football, basketball, and baseball games and received
messages of his support for our accomplishments. Coach Ortiz’
belief in us has shaped us each into better humans.
