he didn’t have to know that I had just gone and bought
it. So, I ran to the store, grabbed some clown make-up,
came home and found his number on my employee call
list from work.
I called, and his teenage daughter answered and said
that he was not at home and asked if I wanted to leave
a message. I said that I didn’t want to leave a message
but to just tell him Dodie from work called. I was a
little disappointed and thought he was probably out
on a date or something. After about five minutes, my
phone rang, and it was him! When I answered, he
asked if I had just called him. I can be a bit of a clown
myself, so I said that I hadn’t called him. He started
to stutter a little, and I started to laugh, which was a
great icebreaker. I told him that I had called and that
I had found some clown make-up. He told me that he
was leaving town on Monday morning and asked if he
could pick it up that evening. I gave him my address,
and he asked me if he could bring his daughter with
him. A while later, he and his 12-year-old daughter
arrived at my house. My 12-year-old daughter had a
couple of friends over, and they all hung out and had a
great time while Mike and I visited for hours.
He left and went on his business trip, and we didn’t
really have an actual date until the Saturday after
Thanksgiving that year. We were married on March
23, 1991 - a little less than five months after the clown
makeup incident. I don’t think we would have ever
gotten together had we not formed a really good
friendship when I invited him to come over to get that
make-up. I actually did only want a friend to hang out
with, so now that we’ve been married for almost 30
years, I guess the joke was on me. After all these years,
I love spending time with my fun-loving husband who
always makes me
laugh. Between the
two of us, we have
five daughters, who
were all teenagers
when we married.
These five little girls
have given us 18
grandchildren and
eight great-grandkids
with one more on the
way. It hasn’t always
been easy, but it’s
always been fun -
and I wouldn’t trade
my crazy clown for
anything.
