Since the 1991 fall enrollment, this education partnership between
Wayland, United Way and local schools has seen 898 students
receive $4,180,272 - over $4,600 per student. The percentage of the
PEP students who graduate mirrors the rest of the enrollment. This
is money well spent to encourage students to complete a higher
education degree and have opportunities that they might not
otherwise have discovered.
Don says, “Giving like that into these kids, I think, is the key to
success in all aspects of human life when you get right down to it.
I succeed in business by training people to grow. And I can’t say
enough about the commitment of Dr. Claude Lusk and the whole
Wayland team to these young people.”
“This program, to me,” Don said, his eyes brightening, “is a real
compliment to this community; no other community has done
this. Our community has put in $700,000. We support our young
people with United Way funds. And this is one of the most popular
programs. We are in our 27th year. I challenge the kids with this:
‘You are going to want to be a person with a degree, particularly in
the world you are going into. Get a year,
and find out what it is like. Discover
that college is not so scary.’ The dollar
