My two older grandchildren are in their teens. I was
a much younger grandmother to them – playing
games of chase and basketball and croquet; they got
to know me in a different light and for a longer time.
My only grandson, Austin, is now 18 and ready to be
a Red Raider. He’s coming to Lubbock and will live
in my back house – so my grandmothering days with
him will evolve into a new context (which I am sure
will include some proofreading of college essays!).
And that is a big part of my purpose now – a transfer
of legacy. Ever the English teacher – in fact, my
grandmother name is “Grammar” – I am privileged to
continue to have and find opportunities to touch this
          next generation in my family.

I read a book once that touched me deeply; it is
entitled The Last Lecture. It is the story of a man who
was scheduled to give a lecture to college students on
what he would say if this were to be his last words
to them, and then, before the date of the lecture,
he found out that he only had months to live. His
last lecture would, indeed, be his last lecture. I am INVITE YOU TO
saying to Harper all the things I want to say should
I go Home sooner than I anticipate. This is a joy, a VETERAN’S CELEBRATION AT THE MAZE
privilege and a sacred trust. I have so many more “WE SALUTE OUR VETERANS”
          stories yet to write . . .
