When asked what he thought Marine Corps
people would remember about
him, Calvin hopes it will be his
sense of humor, kindness, and
generosity and that he was a “man after God’s own heart.”

us the good news over the radio at about

Calvin was in the Philippines when the
war ended, and he was shipped to San
Francisco to return home. His family and
the community were very happy that he
returned with no service-related injuries. Doing business locally for over 38 years
Calvin went to a radio/TV school, where he
received an operator’s license in electronics
and pursued a career working with solid-
state transistors. He worked many years
as an instrument repairman for Dawson
Geophysical and also served as vice
president of their electronics division.
Sgt. Clements’ military unit has held many
reunions. However, only 23 soldiers from
the 96th Infantry Reserve Command were
able to attend the most recent one held in
Washington D.C. Fortunately, the 96-year-old
has managed to stay in contact with a few
of his fellow veterans in Cincinnati, Ohio.
And he even returned to Okinawa in 2015
and took many pictures. He has an extensive
collection of books about Okinawa.
The elder soldier believes that through his
wartime experiences he learned discipline,
tolerance, and patience, as well as how to
be coachable. He adds, “I think most young
men should volunteer for enlistment in the
military.”
