Grammy taught school. He was principal for 17
years and enjoyed all of the school employees and
the students. Every December he’d have the teachers
take a break while he led all the students in singing
Christmas Carols. He was very organized and cared
about both his teachers and students. He was also
a member and treasurer for the Lions Club and a
Deacon at First Baptist Church Anton. He retired
from AISD in 1990 at the age of 57.
For a period of time in the 90’s, Papa worked for
a private company traveling around Texas evaluating
teachers. He also substituted in the Anton schools
where he knew everyone so well. The Spanish-
speaking mission church in Anton benefitted by his
worship leading. (He can’t speak Spanish, but he can
sing it!) and he delivered Meals on Wheels. Our mom and dad, Luci and Brad, got married in 1997,
and in 2001 Grammy went to be with the Lord. Elissa was only 3 months old and Shelby wasn’t born
yet.
In 2012 Papa moved to a senior living community in Lubbock where he is an Ambassador. He leads
prayer and Wednesday night church services and preaches Sunday morning when the preacher is not
there. He believes that if you are still here (on Earth), then there is a job for you to do. God always has
a purpose for you. He tells jokes everywhere he goes and brings joy to everyone. Doctors ask to hear
a joke at his appointments, and the nurses say they are glad he brightened their day. Employees at the
drug store and bank have come to expect a joke and song. If he forgets, they ask where their song is.
Of course, he obliges by singing right away! His neighbors and even their family members bring Papa
jokes, so he always has new material.
Our Papa is special because he is so sweet, makes a lot of jokes and is always happy.
