Currently, Ellen is also teaching the challenge-
level to experienced dancers. Those nights,
when we are all learning together, are filled
with laughter and exuberance. She is currently
encouraging and teaching several new callers.
Clearly, age hasn’t limited Ellen’s ability to learn
(and teach) new things, and it hasn’t stopped
her from being available to serve the growing
community of square dancers. Ellen shows up
at the square dance building most nights and is
present at our Country and Western club dances
most Saturdays. Ellen and her husband of 55
years, Charles Spoon, are steadfastly committed
to building the square dance community in
Lubbock. We simply couldn’t do it without them.
Charles is President of the Lubbock Area Square
and Round Dance Federation. It’s a family
activity, and, even though it’s voluntary, it is a
full-time job that involves (among many things)
driving to Texas State Square Dance functions,
and community outreach on all levels. Charles is
often on local television promoting lessons each
new session, and they both consistently “talk the
talk.” Ellen has a BMI/ASCAP license through
CallerLab.
Charles and Ellen enjoy their growing family
and stay involved in their lives. Ellen’s Christian
values ground her, and she is supportive and
kind to everyone she meets. She is a perfect
example that age is just a number in our heads. It
