Dr. Haley’s many efforts have not gone unnoticed. She
has been named “A Woman Who Shaped the University”
(2018); she was recognized for a Decade of Excellence
(1991); she received the Lauro F. Cavazos Award for
Distinguished Service to TTU (1989); and she was
awarded the TTU Faculty Service Award by the TTU
Association of Parents (2003). On August 1, 2024, Texas
Tech University provided a reception in honor of Dr.
                                                              Haley’s 80th birthday and established a Presidential
Scholarship in her name to mark the occasion.

Despite Dr. Haley’s many accomplishments and
accolades, her life has not been without challenges and
disappointments; however, she has met such events
with the same optimism, tenacity, energy, and creativity
which have led to her many successes.

Across three states, she has become known as a gracious
woman of character, vision, passion, hard work, and
integrity. This native of Homer, Louisiana has now
firmly established her roots in West Texas and has
become a priceless gem, a distinguished educator, and a
genuine gift to the Lubbock community. The young girl
Dr. Haley with her husband, Dr. Glenn Murray Jones from Louisiana has become a legendary lady of Lubbock.
supporting St. Mary of the Plains Hospital, Covenant
Health Care System, Lubbock Chamber of Commerce,
United Way, Lubbock’s Housing Authority, the
Convention and Visitor Bureau, National Ranching
Heritage Association, and the Lubbock Arts Alliance. Dr.
Haley currently chairs the Carillon Senior Living Board
of Directors and serves on the Carillon Foundation
Board, as well as the TTU College of Health & Human
Sciences Dean’s Advisory Council. She once commented,
“The Lubbock community has always been very
supportive of me. Therefore, I feel I have a responsibility
to give back to the community.”

Even as an undergraduate student, Bess Haley
maintained a full agenda of interests, goals, plans, and
activities. One of her professors once asked, “Well, Bess,
when are you ever going to just sit under a tree?” It is
evident that “sitting under a tree” has never been part of
         her DNA!

Dr. Haley did pause her professional life, and increased
her personal happiness, on the afternoon of May 20,
1995, when she married Dr. Glenn Murray Jones, M.D.,
a radiologist and Texas A&M graduate. Dr. Jones
consequently joined Bess in many TTU events and
became a loyal fan of the Red Raiders (unless they were
playing the Aggies). Bess and Glenn were married
almost 20 years until his passing in 2014.
