play piano and sing.” Meador played there for
about five years. He and others involved with the
Cactus were integral to the growth of the Lubbock
music scene.
“We did Donnie Allison’s Buddy Holly Story a
few times. I got to play Buddy’s drummer, J.I.
Allison. That was my first time acting and having
lines,” said Meador. “There was a great level of
professionalism that was passed on from the
experience at the Cactus. It was a real show. That
impacted a lot of kids then who took that on into
their adult lives. I was proud to be part of that.”
Over the years, Meador has performed at Austin
City Limits, and he has been featured on The
Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He’s played at
Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. He
played a benefit concert with Kenny Maines, John
Sprott, and many other local musicians at the
Cactus Theatre for Don Caldwell, who passed
away in May. “There’s a lot of homegrown talent
here,” Meador said. “We were lucky to be a part of
it.”
As one of four 2024 West Texas Walk of Fame
inductees, Meador was recognized in a ceremony
hosted by Civic Lubbock on October 3 at the
Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Theatre. “It’s a
real honor,” said Meador.
A celebration show in honor of Meador and the
other inductees was performed October 5 at the
historic Cactus Theatre featuring Jay Boy Adams
& Zenobia, Meador, David Terry, Mike Carraway,
R.B. Blackstone, and special guest Aaron LaCombe.
West Texas has generated so many phenomenal
musicians. We are fortunate that Steve Meador still
calls this area “home.”
