When I lived in the US, in South Lubbock near undeveloped
land, I took my granddaughter “exploring” on that land.
We had gardening gloves, a kid-size spade/shovel, and a
small bucket. We’d see prairie dogs, hawks, bunnies, and
jackrabbits. She chased butterflies, made up stories about
our adventures, found rabbit bones, put carrots down
bunny holes, and collected rocks. Now when I visit home,
four years later, we stop by that land (which is getting
smaller due to housing development.) But at age 11, she
remembers fondly those Saturday “adventures” together,
and I see her mind fall back into the magic of all those hours
of pretending together.

I do a week-long Gramma Camp every summer with
three of my grandchildren and usually two of my
nieces. This summer´s theme is “Community Service,”
so we´ll be doing that together. Last summer was
“Sculpture,” so we toured TTU and saw a lot of the
sculptures there. The year before was “Monuments,”
so we visited the Veterans, the First Responders, and
the Tornado, with a drive-by of the Buddy Holly statue
thrown in. We also see movies, read books, swim, have
a campfire in the backyard with s´mores, build boats
out of recyclable materials and lots more. We have
done this for several years, and it has always been
amazing. I love every memory we have made.
