I REMEMBER

                I saw them… the “warriors”… the
                soldiers…the boys.

Muddy boots… graffiti on their helmets…
smiles on their faces… age in her eyes
They were kids… so was I

Kids who woke to mortars. kids who
                sloshed through rice paddies
and watched the tree line and listened…
                and died.

                There are no glorious wars,
there are no limited wars for the soldiers –
for theirs is the ultimate sacrifice.
Their life, that you and I might live in
                peace.

                I saw them…
                I still see them…
                                                                                            Combat Boots
                I remember.
