OPPORTUNITY
TO Serve
A New Generation
LEARNING TO SERVE
By Doak Sexton, former Youth Volunteer and now Operations Assistant at the Volunteer Center of Lubbock
intentional efforts can make a lasting difference. Through
this work, I discovered my own passion for serving
others and contributing to the greater good of the
community.
What made HYPE especially meaningful was that it
allowed me to practice leadership, not just learn about
it. By collaborating with fellow students, sharing ideas,
and working together toward common goals, I gained
confidence in my ability to lead and communicate
effectively. I learned how to listen, adapt, and support
others; skills that extend far beyond the program itself.

the HYPE program (Helping Youth Purposefully
Engage), I was able to see Lubbock through new
eyes and learn what it truly means to lead with
compassion and purpose.
The HYPE program was one of the most formative
experiences of my life, shaping who I am today, both
as a student and as an active member of the Lubbock
community. While I was in high school, HYPE
opened doors I didn’t even know existed. It pushed
me beyond the familiar walls of my school and into
the heart of the community, helping me understand
Lubbock in a deeper, more meaningful way.
