Fellow music partner, Kelly Hastings, had
this to say: "Bobby Havens is one of the most
devoted Christian men I have ever known. He
is also a mentor to me and others like me. The
band he was in played all over... and was the
backup band for many of the older generation of
country music stars."
In recent years, Bobby has enjoyed hosting the
Havens Half Acre Podcast, where he discusses
biblical teachings and sings another one of his
favorite genres: gospel music. His love for it also
keeps him performing gospel at Cowboy Church
every Sunday.
With his presence all over Lubbock in
performances in Country Company and other
groups, it's hard to miss Bobby, and if you do
catch him, you'll always remember him.
Bobby also told me tragic stories of his scariest
experiences, illustrating times that he and his
comrades weren't sure who the enemy was: if
someone they ran across was an innocent civilian
or a saboteur in disguise. One day, Bobby got so ill
in the field, he fell unconscious for days and, had
it not been for a friend carrying him to get help, he
might not be with us today.
Bobby returned to the states in 1971 and
immediately got right back into music. He first
played with Larry Trider, then later with Curly
Cook and the Country Company. The band's talent
stood out enough that it captured the attention of
Kenny Vernon, and that collaboration in Las Vegas
ran from 1973-1975. It was then he met and married
Fran Skarda, and the couple had three daughters.
Bobby started Bobby Havens Insurance Agency.
The couple stayed together until 2004. Then, Bobby
closed the agency, and as if the fates were bringing
them back together, Bobby reunited with his first
wife, Treva, and they remarried in 2007.
Bobby's close friend and band mate, Bobby
Moseley, had this to say about his confidante:
"I have been playing and singing with Bobby
Havens for 30 years now. We are as close as
brothers and argue like we’re brothers. At one
point, he had me in a country band, a gospel band
and a blues band, all at the same time."
