Sadly, Carlton lost Wynelle when she died
suddenly, in 2010. It was a difficult time, but
Carlton’s family, his friends from FBC, where he
serves as a deacon, and the VFW surrounded and
supported him. Describing his fellow veterans,
Jessie (as he is known to them) said, “The VFW is
like family now.”
As current Chaplain of the VFW Post 2466, Jessie's
role is to look after veterans who are sick or in the
hospital and stay in contact with any others who
need support. At Christmas, he heads a committee
to select the family of a veteran who needs
assistance. For the last three years, Benchmark
Mortgage has generously sponsored that family
with whatever they requested.
Chaplain Hatchett received the VFW Texas
Chaplain of the Year award for 2019-20. In July #806-794-3956
2019, he was presented the Ambassador for Peace
Medal by the Consulate General of The Republic
of Korea, Hyung Gil Kim, for serving in “The We know a thing or two,
Forgotten War.” Those two awards he will “cherish because we've seen a thing or two.

Carlton’s two girls have given him five
grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, and
