Emilia still loves to sing, WWii
and, if you’re lucky,
she will treat you to her
favorite song, “You Are My Sunshine.” What she
treasures most are her family and her faith. And
coffee. And dessert.
Welcome to Lubbock, Emilia Maese. Thank you
for sharing your story. May you enjoy your just
des(s)erts both here and on the other side.
a wonderful grandmother she has been. “She was
always fun, but the work had to be done first—like
mowing, doing the laundry, hanging clothes on the
line—but there was always a reward afterwards.
She liked shopping and Chick-fil-A as much as
we did. We would spend weeks at a time with
her. She taught us how to shuck corn and how to
pray. She hosted slumber parties for us. She was a
great confidant. She would listen to all our teenage
issues, and she was constantly in prayer for us.
She loved being a part of our lives. She gave us
direction and counsel—not tangible things, but the
most important things. That's her legacy.”
And lucky us. At age 101, Emilia has become a
Lubbockite. She has transitioned beautifully to her
new home at Lubbock’s Beehive. Two months ago,
when the family pulled into the parking lot after
their long trip from Las Cruces, Emilia said, “Am
I home?” Her granddaughters assured her that
she was, and she has embraced it wholeheartedly,
endearing herself to everyone immediately.
Emilia’s daughter-in-law describes her as “hard-
working, strong, disciplined, intelligent, and well-
liked.” The 101-year-old has been healthy all her life
and still doesn’t take any prescription medication.
