SMALL BUSINESSES

Adelphos Cellars. We bottled three wines from our
fourth vintage (2021) earlier this year and have already
won dozens of awards since 2020 in both national and
international wine competitions. It may have seemed
crazy to others, in the spring of 2020, when they decided
to follow through, with plans already made, to launch the
new winery amid an international pandemic. In a season
when we were all attempting to minimize risk wherever
possible, they knew this was a risky decision. But we’ve
been rewarded by seeing growth in so many ways, as
we’ve had to support each other in stressful situations
and become collaborators as well as family, working
to build something bigger than ourselves into what we
hope will become a legacy, passed down to my children
and my brother’s. During 2020 and 2021, it helped us to
remember something the vineyard teaches us year after
year: the vines are resilient, and so are we.
In the spring of 2019, I had the privilege, at the invitation
of my dad, to attend the annual Newsom Grape Day
gathering at the Plains, Texas vineyard of Neal Newsom,
one of the founding fathers of Texas viticulture. Mr.
Newsom has been hosting this event for more than 30
years in his barn, and grape-growers, vineyard managers,
and winery owners from across the entire state convene
to discuss current opportunities and challenges in the
industry, relive memories of poor or bountiful harvest
