and Billy added a daughter, Pam, to the
family. Billy had various jobs over the
years and began working at AAA Coffee
Service in 1970, retiring in 1995. Mary passed away in 1995, and
he later married his next-door neighbor, Jo Ann Chandler, whose
husband had passed away in 1993. Jo Ann’s brother, Marine
Cpl. Jack Mang, was killed during the invasion of Tarawa in
November 1943 and was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart.
Billy legally changed his name to Billy D. Rudd, at the age of
70 years, to honor the last name of the only father he had ever
known. It was not until 1975 that Billy found out more about his
biological father and was able to meet his half-sister, who lived
in Clovis, New Mexico and an aunt, who lived in Baird, New
Mexico. He also received photos of his father and the family that
he never knew. Billy jokingly said, “I didn’t know who I was,
but I’m still going.”
