Gulf War Veteran leads TTU System, TTUHSC
“I didn’t ever get deployed, but I understand what it’s like – the not knowing when
or where you might be going. Those who serve and those who are deployed, combat
zones or not, have my eternal respect and admiration,” said Dr. Tedd L. Mitchell, who
completed eight years of military service in 1996.
He served the last five years while working as a staff physician at Cooper Clinic, an
internationally-recognized center of excellence in preventive and sports medicine, and
as medical director of Cooper Wellness Program (now Cooper Wellness Strategies).
Mitchell then served as President and CEO of Cooper Clinic before joining TTUHSC
in 2010 as the university’s eighth President. He is also a faculty member in internal
medicine; he continues his research interests in the effects of activity and lifestyle on
health, as well as maintains a limited medical practice.
Since October 2018, Mitchell also has served concurrently as Chancellor of the Texas
Tech University System. As a veteran, Mitchell said he is incredibly proud that each of
the system’s four universities holds veterans and those currently serving in the armed
forces in high esteem.
Angelo State University, Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences
Center and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso are all Military
Friendly Schools, a designation by Victory Media and G.I. Jobs. The commendation
notes the effort and success demonstrated to create a
sustainable and meaningful educational experience for the
military community. Additionally, TTUHSC established
one of the first nursing programs nationwide to award
college credit for military medical experience with its
Veteran to Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
Dr. Tedd L. Mitchell met and married Dr. Janet
Tornelli-Mitchell while they were attending medical
school at the University of Texas Medical Branch
in Galveston. They were also colleagues at Cooper
Clinic for several years. The Mitchells have three
adult children: Katherine Schwartz (husband,
Ben Schwartz), an assistant district attorney, and
Charlie, a petroleum engineer; both live in Dallas.
Chris, a graduate student at Villanova University,
plans to pursue military service in the future, adding
a fourth-generation to the family’s military legacy.
