Since Herschel signed up for the reserves (to get out two weeks early in 1947), he was called up for
Korean War service in 1950 and sent to Reese Air Force Base which had been re-activated in 1949. He
was active at several duty stations until 1973 when he “retired from the whole military.” He had served
in three different branches of service. After leaving the service, Herschel went to work for the U.S. Post
Office. A friend later got him on as a policeman for the City of Lubbock; Herschel jokingly said, “I
decided he wasn’t
my friend after
all.” He retired
from the police Medicare Supplements
force in 1988
after 15 years of
