Williams PTA, as well as the Head Start Volunteer
award. Blanchie served on the Family Selection
Committee for Habitat for Humanity. She worked
on so many Habitat homes, doing all kinds of labor,
that even she doesn’t remember how many. She
was AARP’s Local Coordinator for Health Advocacy
Services and was recognized for Outstanding
Community Service by that organization. Nobody can
recall how many years she took meals to Lubbock’s
homeless wherever she found them - in parks, at the
library, and most recently, at Tent City.
Blanchie has been a hands-on grandmother, too.
When she heard someone say one of her grandsons
might not do well in life, she stated emphatically,
“I bet he do! I’m gonna see that he do!” And he
did, thanks to a grandmother who invested in him
regularly.

It’s obvious Blanchie Swisher relies on Someone bigger
than herself for strength and energy. Her Bible is as 806-438-8557
worn as any I’ve ever seen. “Best I can count, I’ve janebromley53@gmail.com
read it through four times.” It looks like 400 would be
closer to accurate. There are more words underlined
than not, and the tape on the cover can barely hold
the dog-eared pages together. (The 23rd Psalm is her
favorite, and she made sure I wrote that down.)
As the interview concluded, I gave Blanchie the last
word. “Do all you can while you can, as long as you
can! That’s my sayin’.”
After investing in East
Lubbock for over seven
decades, it is clear that
this woman practices
what she preaches.
