June earned the rank Private First Class
while in school and was discharged in 1978 as
Specialist 4th Class. The veteran is very proud
of her service to her country and the many
skills the United States Army taught her.

After serving her country, June moved to
Lubbock and worked at a local hospital for
over 25 years in the IT department. She backed
up systems when the computers were six feet
tall and took up several rooms in the basement.
She printed reports and paychecks and was
                                       called on to fix
                                       printers, fax
                                       machines and
                                       computers on
                                       the third shift.
                                       In her time off,
                                       she pursued
                                       art. Today she
                                       continues to
                                       paint as well
                                       as crochet
                                       tablecloths,
                                       dolls, and
                                       blankets.

                                       June said,
                                       “When I
entered the Army, women had to make a
75 or higher on the entrance exam and men
much lower.” She knew from the onset there
were going to be differences between the way
men and women were treated. However, her
age, wisdom, and life experience gave her an
advantage. “I learned to stand up for myself.”
June December, a woman whose inner
strength is evident, will always be grateful
for that chapter in her life. And perhaps her
unusual name is an indication that the latter
half of this big dreamer’s life will be even
           greater than the first half.
