The Power of an Hour
by Lisa Gilliland
What a difference an hour of your life can make to someone in need. On average, it takes about one hour to deliver a
Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ route. In that short 60 minute time frame, you have the opportunity to brighten someone’s day,
give someone a nutritious meal, and spend time with someone who otherwise would be alone. What better way to spend
an hour?
In 2016, our dedicated volunteers logged over 22,890 hours. Considering that we are only open Monday-Friday that is an
impressive average of about 90 volunteer hours per day! Our volunteers spend their time volunteering, not only to deliver
meals but also to help in our kitchen and office and assist with our many events and fundraisers. We could not offer all of
our programs (Weekend Meals, Emergency Meals, Pet Food Program, 12 Days of Christmas) much less deliver over 700
meals a day without the help of our 1400+ volunteers. Whether you can deliver once a week, once a month or once a year,
we can always use your help. You can deliver as often or as little as you are able – it just takes an hour and it will be the best
60 minutes of your day! Join the Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ volunteer force and experience the power of an hour!
All volunteers are required to attend a one-hour orientation and pass a background check. All volunteer forms can be
completed on our website at www.lubbockmealsonwheels.org. Orientations are held regularly, and if your office or group
would like to become corporate volunteers, orientations can also be held at your place of business. For more information,
please contact us at 806-792-7971.
