EXCEPTIONAL SENIORS
As retirees, we may be busier now than we were
as full-time educators. We have entered the stage
of grandparenting and keep our grands a couple
of days a week. Rashell sings with the Sweet
Adelines’ Pride of West Texas Show Chorus and
the Lubbock Chorale. She is also involved with the
women’s ministry at Monterey Church of Christ. I
have picked up several volunteer gigs around
Lubbock. I volunteer with Friends of the Library
sorting books at the donation sheds in town, work
at FOL’s monthly bookstore at Mahon Library, and
serve as one of the vice-presidents. I am a member
of the Lubbock Master Gardener Association, help
organize the annual Hub City Garden Tour, and
serve as the membership/certification coordinator.
I usher at both the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing
Arts and Sciences and the Cactus Theater. For three
years I was a reader for Literacy Lubbock’s Tiny Tots,
hosting a weekly preschool story time at Godeke
and Groves Libraries. For a short time, I read for
the preschool program at Roberts Elementary. I also
belong to the South Plains Genealogical Society,
South Plains Iris Society, and Texas Tech Chapter of
the Sons of the American Revolution.
When not volunteering, I spend much of my time in
our backyard. We have planted twenty fruit trees;
three long beds filled with irises, wildflowers, and
perennials; several raised garden boxes; a pumpkin
tunnel; and rose and asparagus beds. I am currently
constructing a greenhouse of recycled wooden
framed windows. Future projects include a Japanese
garden and monarch way station.
Rashell and I are proud of our three children,
Kaitlyn, Grant, and Molly. All were born in Germany,
but each graduated from their own high school in
a different country. Kaitlyn teaches at Kingdom
Preparatory Academy and is married to Scott Hall,
the Associate, Youth, and College Minister at First
Christian Church. Our son, Grant, is an LTJG in the
US Navy, stationed at Tinker Air Force Base outside
Oklahoma City. Molly, our youngest, is a recent
graduate of The University of Texas with a degree in
Art Education.
The Department of Defense Education Activity is a federal
school system which operates 163 schools in eight districts
located in eleven foreign countries, seven states, Guam,
and Puerto Rico.
