Welcome to the 2024 Winter edition of Senior Link Magazine. The vision for this from
issue came about this past summer when my daughter and her friend Isabel were
invited to attend a Journalism Camp at Columbia University. Not only would they be
participating in a week-long camp but they were also given the opportunity to have the
dinner with one of Lubbock’s local legends, Scott Pelley.

I knew the famous news anchor was from Lubbock, and since my daughter had
been given this once-in-a-lifetime chance, I also knew I had to have her document
the experience for our readers. I mean, you can’t just sit down with one of the most
celebrated journalists of our time and not expect me to have you write an article!
So, in this issue, you will find Abigail’s and Isabel’s story of
their meeting in NYC with CHS graduate, Scott Pelley, as well
as the stories of several other local legends and exceptional
seniors in our community. Lubbock has such a wealth of talent
that occasionally it is nice to be reminded of it. It was timely
that Civic Lubbock was concurrently inducting four more
“legendary” citizens into our city’s Walk of Fame, so you’ll get
to read their stories, too.
Many of the others featured in this issue have so many
accolades that they also qualify as “local legends.” And the
large number of stories we have printed over the years doesn’t
even put a dent in the number of those South Plains residents
who deserve honor. But it’s a start. And we look forward to
where it goes from here.
As I always say, we all have a story to tell. The job of Senior
Link is to provide a platform for those stories. As you may
know, we rely on you, our readers, to help make those stories
happen. As you read, please keep this in mind and contact me
with your stories and ideas. We love to partner with you.
As we move into the winter season, I pray that you are surrounded by friends and family and have an opportunity
to share those stories. One friend who hangs out at our house a lot always shares the same story every time he is
here. As much as my girls get annoyed hearing the same story over and over, I know that it is a story they will never
forget. Enjoy the stories and repeat the stories. That will go a long way towards preserving the memories for younger
generations.
One last thought–it seems that a lot of us are in transition. As a country, as a community, perhaps, as a family, and
maybe, individually. None of us know what tomorrow looks like, but I am focusing on being grateful for today. I
believe that attitude will be beneficial for all of us throughout the holidays and the year ahead. I am thankful for each
of you.
Please remember also to thank our advertisers. I am grateful to them for making this and all our issues possible.
