Welcome to Winter 2023! This has been an exciting and challenging year with
many difficulties to face and many gifts to embrace in our family’s life and in the
the lives of our staff. That is surely true for each of you, as well. Life seems to be
coming at us at a faster pace as we all try to keep up. Hopefully, the Christmas
holidays and winter weather will encourage us to slow down, spend time with publisher
loved ones, and savor the season. This edition is packed full of stories and
resources that we hope you will enjoy as you take a breath, grab a cup of hot
chocolate, and put your feet up.
The idea for our cover photo seemed like a longshot, but we were thrilled and
honored to have the presidents of both Lubbock Christian University and Texas
Tech University join us at United to express their
solidarity in support of the Lubbock community.
Both men are highly respected leaders and
tremendously busy in their respective roles, and I
am grateful they were able to make this happen.
Many of our readers are alumni of one of the two
institutions (or their children or grandchildren are)
and are sure to appreciate this unique cover.
The overarching theme of Senior Link Winter 2023
is “the value of community.” The two university
communities, the uniquely special Slaton community,
those friends gathering regularly at United Stores,
the circles of artists and musicians, and all the
other groups we encountered impressed on us the
tremendous benefit of connecting with others. And
it confirmed to us the importance of highlighting
opportunities to be a part of something bigger than
ourselves.
Also, in this issue, we would like to introduce our
first ever Texas Tech student intern, Calan Johnson.
When we agreed to the partnership, neither Calan
nor Senior Link knew what to expect, but the
relationship has proven to be mutually beneficial.
Three of the articles in this edition are Calan’s work,
and we are especially pleased with his interview with
and subsequent story about Texas Tech President Dr.
Lawrence Schovanec.
We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we took pleasure in putting it together. As another holiday season
comes and goes, may you revel in all the precious moments with your family, friends, and the communities
that surround you. Thank you for helping make Senior Link such a fun journey. Please always feel free to reach
out to me and share your thoughts and ideas as we continue to grow and learn and appreciate each other!
And may each of us be rested, ready, and equipped to welcome 2024 with open arms.
