reaped the benefits of my father's hard work (although
they were a bit smoky), but I have never since sunk my
teeth into another ice cream sandwich that doesn't take
me back to that time. Lastly, I can't just speak about
my dad in this because behind the scenes was my
mother, loving me and my sister, cooking, cleaning,
washing, and most of all supporting my dad and our
family so Dad could go out and do his job. Thank you

of the alarm going off for a fire was something that,
even as an adult, I cannot explain—it was a bit of a
rush! I have always been proud of what my dad did
all those years, but it wasn't until I got older
that I could understand the true sacrifices he
made being a fireman. When I was younger,
I knew that daddy was not always going to
be able to make it to certain events. Holidays
were not always celebrated on the actual
holiday; instead, it was celebrated when
we could all be together. The time away
from his family could not have been easy
on him; then you add in the emotional and
mental tolls a job like that has on a person.
I was just a proud daughter of a Lubbock
firefighter, the daughter who got to have a
true hero for a dad!"
