This past weekend, my family attended the wedding of my niece. She is the
first of many nieces and nephews who will eventually get married. As we drove
up, my eyes filled with tears as I reminisced to my husband stories of her birth publisher
and the joy of getting to be a part of her young life.

Then today, I went to the funeral of a dear friend and neighbor. Howard was a
WWII veteran for whom I had so much
respect - not only for his service to our
country but also for who he was to our
                 community. Even more importantly, I
respected him because of the love that
he showed so faithfully to his wife of 72
                 years.

It was a unique perspective, witnessing
                 young love and marriage juxtaposed
with the grief of my sweet friend Emma
Lou - alone for the first time in seven
decades. Love is a beautiful gift that
often lasts a lifetime, but it is often
punctuated by loss and grief. The “Love
Stories” edition of Lubbock Senior Link
is evidence. The inspiring story of Cody
and Bekah speaks of unconditional love in the most tragic of circumstances. You’ll be touched by the stories
of other people who have loved a lifetime, some who are learning how to live again after the loss of a loved
one, and some who have found new love after loss.

The stories are different, but the common thread is love. What I hope the younger generation, like my
niece, can learn from these pages is that, although heartache and grief inevitably accompany love, the
reward is fulfillment and joy. A strong marriage is the result of walking through hard times as well as
good times, sharing laughter and tears, experiencing growth in trials, focusing on each other’s strengths,
overlooking shortcomings and celebrating the mature love that emerges.

As we enter this Winter season, I encourage you to embrace those around you with love and appreciation.
You might want to warm up by taking that special person out to dinner at Picoso’s Mexican Kitchen. You
will find a story in this edition about their love for our community and how they are giving back 100% of
the profits to help better the lives of the staff. When you are there, make sure to thank them and let them
know you saw their story in Senior Link.
