favorite flavor?” I asked. “I like them all, but my
favorite is butterscotch.” He remembered them
from his early childhood days when he would go
to the soda shop inside the drug store. We spent
some time sharing about our favorite flavors and
milkshake memories. He liked his with whipped
cream and a cherry on top – two, if possible. I
suggested, “You know, we can make daily
milkshakes happen for you. “ His eyes lit up, and a
smile came across his face.
This third-year medical student and I began our
conversation about shirts and how to mark his
name, then down the challenging road of his pain
and history of medications, to what was most
important to him. During his last weeks of life,
he received a milkshake with two cherries every
day until he could no longer enjoy them. There
was no doctor’s order needed for what was most
important to this gentleman. He simply needed the
right question asked. I know a milkshake is not a
prescription for most, but for this man, it was the
best medicine.
