A Christmas Cookie Connection BY JANE BROMLEY

West Texans have the chance to appreciate them, too.
Lubbock has a wealth of interesting and inspirational life
stories waiting to be told by members of The Greatest
Generation, and it is important for us to hear them.
That is the main reason Calvert Home Health Care and
Hospice of Lubbock, partnered with Senior Link to throw
a particular kind of get-together at LakeRidge Assisted
Living in December. The idea was to have children interact
with residents for the purpose of developing relationships.
The staff of Calvert and Hospice of Lubbock launched the
plan with a unique Christmas party. No performances or
entertainment were planned in order to keep the young
and old face-to-face.
The smiles on the faces of preschoolers, middle schoolers,
teenagers, and seniors looked downright similar when they
learned they’d be decorating cookies. Initial awkwardness
was dispelled as soon as the cookies and sprinkles were
distributed. Ice was broken with icing, and stories began
to flow. Jokes were told and selfies were taken. Thoughtful
discussions sometimes gave way to gales of laughter. The
abundance of brightly colored finished products seemed
a fitting backdrop for the liberal spreading of good cheer.
The smiles and respectful behavior from the children were
rewarded with grins and hugs and lively conversation
