Every Spring, we ask high school seniors to write about a senior citizen who has
made an impact on their lives. A large majority of them wrote about a grandparent,
which is understandable because most grandparents love their grandchildren and the
enjoy the role. As I heard someone say recently, “If I’d known it was this much fun,
I’d have figured out how to become a grandpa even quicker.” publisher
I began to think about who I would choose to write about. My grandmother
was very important in my upbringing, but I wondered who else in my life would
deserve accolades. I immediately thought
of teachers. After all, every teacher seems
like a senior citizen, when you are a kid.
My 8th grade history teacher, Mrs. Bambina
recently posted on my Facebook page:
“Hello, sweet butterfly! You will always be
a metamorphic miracle to me. I remember
you becoming a butterfly almost before
my eyes so many years ago.” That was a
defining moment in life. I realized that
I was “somebody”, and I was capable of
great things. My teacher affirmed it, and
now, many years later, I can still draw
strength from her belief in me.
Two of the honorees in this issue are
retired generals who mentor young people. But you don’t have to be a general, a teacher, or even a grandparent
to make a difference in a young person’s life. Your cumulative wisdom and experience can be of benefit to
anyone willing to pay attention. Two of our stories feature women who have invested in young ladies outside
their family. You can be an important part of someone’s story – especially if they are young. Don’t retire from
the opportunity to mentor.
We all need someone to believe in us, encourage us and patiently anticipate our metamorphosis. We all want to
reach our full potential, to become the best version of ourselves – to achieve “butterfly status”. (On a related
subject: Be sure and check out the upcoming “Butterfly Exhibit” at Science Spectrum. It is guaranteed to delight
and inspire you.)
Finally, a big thank you to AIM Bank who has sponsored this edition for the last three years and to Wentz
Orthodontics who has generously stepped up to help. Senior to Senior 2019 could not have happened without
their support. If you have the opportunity, please thank them for facilitating the metamorphoses of the young
“butterflies” featured on our cover.
